Orquestra Clássica do Sul and Conductor Rui Pinheiro
This programme will consist of two works which, despite the points which they have in common, were composed 210 years apart.
Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony was a landmark work since it opened the way for the romantic symphonic poem, due to the way in which it departs from the classic structures of the Symphony and introduces the connection with elements from outside the music, such as poetry and painting. This is why it was sublimely used by Walt Disney in his animated film Fantasia.
The work Sillages, for percussion and orchestra, was commissioned by the Orquestra Clássica do Sul from its associate composer for 2018, Bruno Soeiro. Structured in various movements, each one will use a set-up comprising different instruments and will be inspired by the various categories of fragrances: citrus, woody, floral and oriental.

Rui Pinheiro has been the Chief Conductor at the Orquestra Clássica do Sul since January 2015. From 2010 to 2012, he was Associate Conductor at the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (United Kingdom) where he was responsible for more than twenty programmes, including Hall of Fame and Queen Elisabeth II’s Jubilee celebrations. He was Conductor for the Orchestra of the National Conservatoire in Lisbon from 2005 to 2008 and in London he was the Musical Director of the Ensemble Serse, a Baroque opera company performing on period instruments. He also founded the Ensemble Disquiet devoted to divulging Portuguese contemporary music (2008 – 2010).
ORQUESTRA CLÁSSICA DO SUL
Founded in 2002 as the Orquestra do Algarve, the orchestra became the Orquestra Clássica do Sul (OCS) in September 2013, with the aim of taking its mission to the regions of the Algarve, Alentejo and Setúbal Peninsula in Portugal, and Andalusia in Spain, offering a diverse programme, high in artistic quality.
Comprising musicians of twelve different nationalities, selected by means of a public competition, the orchestra organises concerts featuring chamber music, opera, promenade concerts (for families), concerts connected to other artistic expressions (such as jazz, fado, dance and literature), workshops and masterclasses.
